Christopher Carley/EcoHome Design
I am a UK-trained architectural designer (BA Hons Degree & Diploma Architecture/ Manchester School of Architecture). I have returned to Britain recently after living and working in the US for 16 years. The following is a summary of my residential design work.
Design Work:
Ten Stones Co-Housing Community (Charlotte, Vermont):
This co-housing community consists of 16 houses plus common house. I worked with five families to design 4 of these homes, including a semi-detached 2-family home built with a local housing association (Burlington Community Land Trust).
Rockingham Community Housing Association (Ludlow, Vermont):
New build affordable housing project consisting of 6 terrace houses and 2 family maisonette flats for a community housing association in village of Ludlow, VT.
Barrel House Cluster/ Findhorn Foundation (Forres, Scotland):
As part of the EcoVillage development at the Findhorn Foundation, I was responsible for the detailed design and site supervision for two new barrel houses. These were built using recycled whiskey blending vats.
Eco-Affiliations:
Building for Social Responsibility (BSR):
This is a Vermont-based group of designers, architects and building professionals who have been working to develop standards for environmentally sound, energy efficient, healthy & affordable housing. As the former president and member of BSR, I served as an organiser and presenter at a series of public workshops on aspects of green homebuilding. Topics included passive solar design as well as efficient use of resources.
Vermont Build Green:
I served on the committee for this programme, which was an outgrowth of BSR (above). We created a green certification system for residential building (both new build houses & substantial renovations). This certification is similar to the BREEAM system for non-residential building in the UK. We developed this programme over a number of years, covering categories such as: Siting & Land Use, Building Design, Quality & Durability, Energy Use, Resource Impacts, Occupant Health & Indoor Air Quality and an Owner Handbook for Operations & Maintenance. This rating system also considers house size as modifier for overall project score.
(Additionally, the scope of my design work has included public building projects such as college, school & library renovations & additions. I would happy to supply further information & references.)
